Driving the Caldera Road: A Sunset Itinerary
From Fira's edge to Oia's last terrace — a four-stop route that lets you photograph the same sunset from four different angles, all without the Oia Castle crowd.
The bus from Fira to Oia is famously crammed at sunset hour, and the queue at Oia's Castle viewpoint can be twenty minutes deep by 7pm. With your own car, you can do better: skip Oia entirely and watch the same sun set from four quieter terraces — each with a different mountain, sea, and cliff angle.
The route, stop by stop
1. Imerovigli (60 minutes before sunset)
Start at the parking area below Skaros Rock. Park, then walk five minutes along the marble path toward the chapel of Theoskepasti. Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera rim, which means the light hits it last — you'll watch shadow climb the village rooftops minute by minute. Few tour buses come here.
2. Firostefani (35 minutes before sunset)
A 90-second drive south. Park anywhere along the main road and walk to the church of Agios Gerasimos. The blue dome here is one of the most photographed in Santorini, but the crowd thins around dinner time. Bonus: you're now 200 metres from a dozen small tavernas if you want to grab an early bite.
3. Oia rim, but skip the Castle (15 minutes before sunset)
Drive past Oia's main parking and continue 500 metres further north toward the Ammoudi viewpoint. Park along the road and walk to any rooftop terrace bar — the angle here looks back at Oia itself, glowing pink. If you book ahead, Strogili café has a small outdoor deck that fits maybe twelve people.
4. Ammoudi Bay (sunset proper)
Descend the switchback road to Ammoudi (or the 286 steps from Oia — but with a car you take the road, obviously). Park at the water. The sun sinks behind Thirassia and reflects off the calm bay. Order a glass of Assyrtiko at one of the four tavernas; Sunset Ammoudi has the best line of sight.
Why a car beats the bus
The KTEL bus runs Fira → Oia direct, but this four-stop sequence only works door-to-door if you can leave Imerovigli at 6:55pm and be in Ammoudi by 8:10pm. The bus would take you 90 minutes for the same route, and at sunset the schedule is at its tightest.
Pickup at the airport or via hotel delivery puts the car in your hands by 6pm — plenty of time to drive the caldera before the light goes.
A small automatic is the right car for this route. The hairpins above Skaros Rock are tight, parallel parking in Firostefani is genuinely cosy, and you'll want both hands on the wheel for the descent into Ammoudi.
